Meteorologists in the EUMETNET team in charge of the southeastern Mediterranean on Monday updated the bad weather warning issued on Saturday, including by giving the bad weather affecting Greece for the next few days the name ‘Avgi’, ANA reports.
Based on the updated forecast, the high pressure in the northwestern Balkans combined with low pressure in the Eastern Mediterranean will give rise to gale-force winds and further drive down temperatures over the next two days, with strong rain in southern parts of the country and islands.
Areas that can expect snow, especially later on Monday and Tuesday morning include Thessaly and the Sporades islands, eastern Central Greece (Viotia, Fthiotida), Evia, Attica, the north and east Peloponnese, and Crete. Conditions will start to gradually improve from Tuesday night or even Wednesday.
Very strong gale-force winds of up to 9-10 Beaufort will blow in the central and south Aegean on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Strong rain and storms are forecast on Tuesday, particularly on the Aegean islands, and are expected to begin clearing up on Wednesday.
Motorists should note that all vehicles are obliged to have snow chains or snow socks in Attica from Monday evening.
