Firefighting forces were reinforced in the fire that broke out on Monday in a grassland area in Antimachia, on Kos island, ANA reports.
According to the Fire Department, more aerial support was added. Currently, twenty-six firefighters and one ground team are working to extinguish the fire, assisted by three aircraft and three helicopters, one of which serves to coordinate actions. Another three firefighting aircraft from Alexandroupolis are expected to be added, while a special unit for forest fires (EMODE) is also heading to the island.
Earlier in the afternoon, the fire was declared out of control due to strong winds. As it was heading to Kardamaina, where a number of hotels and other types of tourist accommodation are situated, an evacuation alert was sent via 112 to people there, instructing them to head toward Antimachia.
