Seismic activity continues in the sea in the area of Anydros, between Thira and Amorgos, where over 200 earthquakes have occurred in the last 48 hours, with a maximum magnitude of 4.5. In fact, it is recommended by the Expert Committees, for safety reasons, to empty swimming pools.
According to seismologist Mr. Gerasimos Papadopoulos, “the earthquakes are tectonic, not volcanic, and the level of seismic risk has increased compared to 48 hours ago, due to the increase in the number of earthquakes, their increase in size and the shift of the epicenters to the northeast”.
Due to the increased seismic activity, the President of the Hellenic Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization (EAPP), Professor Efthimios Lekkas, convened a joint meeting of the two Committees (the Permanent Scientific Committee for Seismic Hazard Assessment and Seismic Risk Reduction and the Permanent Scientific Committee for Monitoring the Greek Volcanic Arc of EAPP) again today at noon.
The meeting was held at the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, in the presence of Minister Vasilis Kikilias, Deputy Minister Evangelos Tournas, the Secretary General of Civil Protection, Vasilis Papageorgiou, as well as representatives of the leadership of the Fire Department.
After a thorough examination of all the data so far, it was unanimously stated by all members of the Committees that:
Seismic activity within the caldera remains in a state of decline.
The seismic sequence continues to be increased in the last 48 hours with more than 200 earthquakes in the Anydros area, between Thira and Amorgos (earthquakes with a maximum magnitude of 4.5).
The current seismic activity in the Anydros island area is due to submarine faults with an NE-SW direction and is not related to volcanic activity.
The Committees propose the following preventive measures:
a. Schools are to remain closed on Monday 03/02/2025 in Thira, Anafi, Ios, and Amorgos.
b. Citizens should:
avoid large gatherings inside buildings.
avoid approaching abandoned buildings.
to avoid access to and stay in the ports of Ammoudi, Armeni, Korfou, and the Old Port of Fira.
to proceed with the removal of dangerous non-structural vulnerability elements in their buildings and the emptying of water in swimming pools.
to choose safe routes when moving within the urban fabric and the provincial road network, especially in places where there are strong morphological gradients and landslides are likely to occur.
to immediately evacuate coastal areas in the event of strong seismic vibrations.
The Committees will meet again tomorrow at noon.
