A Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment and operation of a Destination Management and Promotion Organization (DMMO) was signed by the Minister of Tourism, Ms. Olga Kefalogianni, and the Regional Governor of the Peloponnese, Mr. Dimitris Ptochos.
In the context of the signing of the memorandum, the multiple benefits that the operation of DMMOs offers to the national tourism strategy were presented. The planning of the implementation of the institution in the Peloponnese was also discussed, focusing on the needs of the region and the prospects for collaborations for the implementation of the Organization.
During her statement, the Minister of Tourism emphasized the importance of DMMOs for strengthening the competitiveness and sustainable development of Greek destinations. “The establishment and operation of a Destination Management and Promotion Organization aims to improve the quality of the services provided, to promote destinations more effectively, and to highlight new travel experiences,” he said.
He also pointed out that the creation of DMMOs is a pillar of the national tourism policy, offering a modern and flexible tourism governance model, based on the cooperation of all stakeholders.
“This cooperation model is a foundation for upgrading the tourism product and extending the tourist season throughout Greece. We are moving forward with determination towards achieving our goal, upgrading the tourism product, extending the tourist season while simultaneously spreading it to all regions of the country, as well as creating experiences with high added value.”
The Ministry is implementing the project of establishing and operating DMMOs with funding from the Recovery and Resilience Fund, offering support to local organizations through studies and technical assistance during the first steps of their operation.
The Regional Governor of Peloponnese, Mr. Dimitris Ptochos, underlined that the establishment of the DMMO “VisitPeloponnese” will ensure stability and continuity in the implementation of the region’s tourism policies. He pointed out that the creation of the organization will strengthen collaborations between local and national bodies, promote inclusiveness, and contribute to the sustainable development of tourism in the Peloponnese.
The “VisitPeloponnese” Organization will contribute to:
-The effective management of the destination, through the coordination of all tourism and local government stakeholders.
– The development and promotion of new tourism products and experiences.
– The improvement of the international image and identity of the Peloponnese tourism brand.
– The upgrading of infrastructure and services in the tourism sector.
– The implementation of targeted marketing actions and participation in international exhibitions.
– The strengthening of collaborations with private sector entities and tour operators.
– The collection and analysis of data on tourist flows and visitor needs.
After the signing of the Memorandum, a working meeting was held with the participation of the Minister, the Regional Governor and representatives of local bodies, where the next plans for the implementation of the DMMO and the strengthening of cooperation between the public and private sectors for the tourism upgrade of the Peloponnese were discussed.
