The large fire that broke out in the Ierapetra area is in full swing, leading to the evacuation of five settlements from the night of Tuesday to Wednesday. By order of the authorities and a message from 112, residents and visitors were evacuated as a precaution from the areas of Achlia, Agia Fotia, Galini, Ferma, and Koutsounari.
The flames reached dangerously close to residential areas, with fronts developing in ravines and difficult-to-access areas, hampering the efforts of the Fire Department. According to information, approximately 1,500 tourists were safely removed from hotels and accommodations in the evacuated areas, with no damage to hotel units reported so far.
The fire broke out at noon on Tuesday (July 2) in a forest area and spread rapidly due to strong winds. Strong firefighting forces continue to operate with ground and air forces, while local authorities are in full mobilization.
The situation remains critical, with the authorities’ efforts focused on preventing the expansion of the fronts and protecting lives and property.
