By Friday, the commercial port of Rethymno is expected to be completely decongested by the more than 440 migrants temporarily housed there, as the Deputy Mayor of Civil Protection of Rethymno, Giorgos Skordilis, told Tornos News. The transfer of 240 people to accommodation centers in Attica is already planned for Wednesday, while the removal of the rest will be completed by the end of the week.
It is obvious that the accommodation conditions at the port were not appropriate, while the images of hundreds of people in the city center, in the midst of the tourist season, are not consistent with the image of an international tourist destination like Rethymno.
The Municipal Authority points out the need for better coordination and management of the migration issue in the future, in order to avoid similar situations that test the resilience of local communities and undermine the functionality of the tourist areas of Crete.
