In Dodoni, the “Summer Oracle” returns for the 9th year

The Summer Oracle, the artistic research workshop for Ancient Drama organized by the DI.K.E.P.E.T. of Ioannina, returns from August 27 to September 7 at the archaeological site of Dodoni and in selected locations in the city of Ioannina.

This year, the Workshop is being held for the ninth year, inaugurating at the same time a new educational activity: the Small Oracle, a theatrical workshop with a corresponding theme, adapted for children aged 8 to 14, which will be held from August 29 to 31.

This year’s theme of the Summer Oracle is titled “The Word in Birds”, drawing inspiration from Aristophanes’ The Birds. Participants are invited to explore the stage and paralinguistic language of comedy, creatively approaching the chirping, voices and meanings of birds. As noted in the rationale for the event, the Oracle of Dodona, according to tradition, was founded by birds, the Peleades, and the oracles interpreted the signs through their flight and song. This year’s action attempts to decode this “language of birds”.

The artistic curation, scientific supervision and organization are signed by Rinio Kyriazi, Artistic Director of DI.K.E.P.E.THE. of Ioannina. The educational program includes courses in acting, theory, voice, movement, translation, walking activities and lectures, with distinguished artists and academics as lecturers.

The Workshop is aimed at students of drama schools and students of relevant university departments, with a maximum number of participants of 20 people, whose selection will be made based on CVs.

The Little Oracle is aimed at children aged 8-14 and aspires to introduce young participants to theatrical expression, through the same thematic approach. The number of participants is set at 20 children and the selection will be made in order of priority. DI.K.E.P.E.T.H. covers the transportation from Ioannina to Dodoni and back, during the hours of the workshops, without however providing childcare outside these hours.

The Summer and Small Oracle activities will be hosted at the Archaeological Site of Dodona, in the courtyard of the Pyrsinella Mansion, at the Aristea Litou Dance School and in selected public spaces in the city of Ioannina. The lectures are open to the public, and participants will be given a certificate of attendance.
