The Greek National Tourism Organization has drawn up a plan to prevent smoking and implement anti-smoking legislation in its facilities (Central Service and Central Warehouse and Information Offices).
The Plan is as follows:
-Smoking is prohibited in all indoor areas of the Greek National Tourism Organization’s facilities.
-Signage prohibiting smoking in visible areas of the Service, as defined in the applicable provisions,
-Taking measures to prevent smoking in the GNTO facilities (indicatively removing ashtrays, lighters, posting notices),
-Informing all personnel serving in the GNTO about the relevant legislation prohibiting smoking and the consumption of tobacco products in the facilities, about the smoking control plan, the method of reporting and the list of fines in accordance with applicable legislation. Regarding electronic cigarettes, new tobacco products and herbal products for smoking, these are assimilated to tobacco products, in terms of their use,
-Supervision of facilities for compliance with the provisions of the anti-smoking law,
-Calling competent Control Bodies in case of detection of a violation of anti-smoking legislation,
-Cooperation of those responsible with the competent control bodies in case of an inspection and disclosure of any information requested
In addition, those responsible for the implementation of the plan for the prevention of smoking are designated as follows:
1. Heads of units at the Directorate/Department/Office level, as responsible for the area of their subordinate units,
2. For common areas, which are areas of responsibility of two or more heads (Directorates, Departments, Offices), there is joint responsibility them, regarding the implementation of the above plan.
Within the framework of the Smoking Prevention Plan, the Responsible Person must ensure in his area of responsibility the following:
-to respond to a complaint about a violation and make recommendations to the violators,
-to call the competent Control Bodies in the event of a violation being detected,
-to cooperate with the competent Bodies during the conduct of the inspection.
-to carry out regular (monthly) and extraordinary inspections for the implementation of anti-smoking legislation (maintenance of prohibition signs, absence of ashtrays, etc.) and to record the results of the inspection in a book recording findings in which the date of the inspection and the detection or not of violations will be indicated.
Also, the Manager in his area of responsibility may organize information campaigns with the aim of raising awareness among employees and distribute information material or brochures explaining the effects of smoking in the workplace.
The Control Bodies impose fines on the GNTO managers, according to the detailed provisions below, for violations such as the following:
-Failure to draw up a Smoking Prevention Plan and designate those responsible,
-Failure to post signs and take other prevention measures (removal of ashtrays),
-Failure of the manager to respond to a protest about the violation,
-Failure to call the competent Control Bodies,
– Lack of cooperation with the Control Bodies.
For indoor workplaces, the fine for the smoker is 100 euros and for the manager – supervisor 500 euros. In any case of repetition of the above violations – relapse, the above imposed fine is doubled.
