American tourism: Demand for Athens takes off this Christmas

A strong annual increase of 32.4% is recorded in the bookings of Americans traveling this Christmas to Athens, pushing the Greek capital two positions higher than last year, in the ranking of the most popular European destinations for the 2017 Holiday Season in the US market

The data comes from a survey conducted by the Allianz Global Assistance insurance company on a sample of 760,000 Americans who booked online an air ticket or holiday package with its partners from June 1 to October 15 for visiting Europe during the Christmas period (22 November 2017 to 8 January 2018).

Top destination in Europe is London despite a drop of 10.9%, Paris ranks second recovering after the terrorist attacks by 16.3%, and Rome ranks third with an impressive increase of 56.4%.

Overall, US demand for travel to Europe in this Christmas season is up 9.2%.
