European travelers preferred destinations in their own Continent, particularly short breaks and city breaks, in 2017 and this trend continues throughout 2018, according to a survey conducted by Groupon Travel.
The main finds of the survey are as follows:
– City tourism was particularly popular in 2017, as reservations were made for 271,000 city trips with 11% of these for Paris. The average stay by the platform’s customers amounted to 1.91 nights.
– 29% of Europeans made 4 or more trips during the previous year.
– The British traveled 2017 more than any other Europeans, with 40% making 4 or more journeys a year. The respective percentage for Germans is 37% and for Spaniards 36%
– Only one in five French traveled more than 4 times in 2017 and 30% did not travel at all during that year.
– Women dominate travel and represent 65% of Groupon Travel customers.
– Half of Groupon’s clients are aged 35-54.
– For 2018, 90% of respondents have made bookings in their own country, with 4% of them in their own city! This shows the great attractiveness of short trips and weekend getaways. One-quarter of Groupon Travel customers have booked a destination within Europe and only 3% for travel outside the continent.
-Italians (93%) are more likely than any other European to stay in their own country while the Germans (39%) prefer traveling to the rest of Europe.
