A Memorandum of Cooperation with the Municipality of Rethymno, for the establishment and operation of a Destination Management and Promotion Organization (DMMO), was signed by the Minister of Tourism, Ms. Olga Kefalogianni, and the Mayor of Rethymno, Mr. Giorgis Marinakis (photo). In her opening remarks, the Minister of Tourism underlined the crucial role of DMMOs as a tool for sustainable tourism development and strengthening the competitive position of Greek destinations. She also stated that these organizations focus on upgrading the quality of tourism services, targeted advertising and promotion of destinations, as well as on the creation of innovative travel experiences.
“Our goal is for tourism development to be qualitative, sustainable, resilient, and to effectively serve the demands of local communities. Through DMMOs, a governance system with good practices is being developed, which will constitute a link between public administration and private initiative, strengthening the coordinated cooperation of all stakeholders”, emphasized the Minister of Tourism.
Ms. Kefalogianni made particular reference to the tourism potential of the region, underlining that Rethymno has exceptional natural and cultural resources, which can form the basis for the development of special forms of tourism such as cultural tourism, gastronomic tourism and wine tourism, sports tourism, and conference tourism.
Finally, he stressed that the establishment of the DMMO will contribute to optimizing the advantages of the region, enhancing its visibility as an excellent tourist destination, with the aim of spreading the number of visitors throughout the year.
The signing of the Memorandum was followed by an extended meeting with the Mayor of Rethymno, Deputy Mayors, the Municipality’s tourism committee, and representatives of organizations.
