The procedures for the creation of a Destination Management and Promotion Organization (DMMO) in Thessaloniki are progressing, following the approval of the relevant Memorandum of Cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism.
The initiative is part of the “Destination Management” project, which is implemented by the Ministry of Tourism with funding from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, within the framework of European support funds.
Objective and operation of the new Organization
The project aims to improve the management of tourist destinations through:
- Establishment and operation of local or regional Destination Management and Promotion Organizations.
- Creation of Sustainable Tourism Development Observatories, which will be linked to the National Sustainable Tourism Development Observatory.
- Providing technical support and studies for the effective governance of destinations, strengthening the cooperation of local and regional bodies and shaping a differentiated, competitive, and sustainable tourism product.
Analysis and evaluation of the tourism identity of Thessaloniki
Within the framework of the project, an extensive analysis of the current situation of the destination will be carried out, with emphasis on:
- Tourism resources, infrastructure, and services.
- Tourism figures and existing land uses.
- The state of the natural environment, coasts, and water resources.
- The human potential and cultural capital of the region.
- The historical and existing tourism demand and supply.
- The position of Thessaloniki in the domestic and international market, with emphasis on competition and promotion strategies.
Based on this data, the carrying capacity of the destination will be assessed, and the main axes of sustainable tourism development and management will be determined.
The Integrated Destination Management Plan
The new Destination Management and Promotion Organization will prepare an Integrated Management Plan, which will include:
- Sustainable tourism development strategies.
- Destination promotion and tourism brand management plan.
- Action plan for the implementation of the strategies.
- Detailed reports on the actual situation of the destination and its development prospects.
Upon completion of the process, Thessaloniki will acquire a comprehensive framework for the management and development of its tourism product, adapted to the modern challenges and requirements of the international market.
