"Green light" for the promotion of the coastal front in Heraklion

A significant step towards the implementation of an emblematic project for the city of Heraklion is taking place, following the approval of the Environmental Impact Study by the Ministry of Culture, based on the positive opinion of the Central Archaeological Council (KAS). This is the project of anti-corrosion protection and promotion of the coastal zone of Old Electric, with a total budget of 5 million euros, integrated into the Sustainable Urban Development Strategy (SUD) of the Municipality of Heraklion, with funding from the “Crete 2021-2027” program.

The mayor of Heraklion, Alexis Kalokairinos, expressed his satisfaction with the development, emphasizing that this is a project of strategic importance, which combines the protection of the cultural heritage with urban revitalization and the creation of two new beaches at the end of Agia Triada. “This project changes the physiognomy of the coastal front, completing a chain of interventions that starts from Neoria and reaches the Rampart of Agios Andreas,” he noted characteristically.

The decision paves the way for the start of one of the most important regeneration projects in the Gulf of Dermatas. Together with the restoration interventions at the Venetian Walls, the inclusion of Neoria in a financing program (10.1 million euros), and the upcoming changes to 18 Anglon Square, Heraklion will acquire a unified and environmentally upgraded coastal front.

The project is expected to upgrade not only the quality of life of residents but also the tourist identity of the city, offering a unique public space where the natural, historical and cultural landscape coexist harmoniously.
