The need to restore the true image of Gavdos was expressed by the mayor of the island, Lilian Stefanaki, in her public statement, emphasizing that the southernmost tip of Europe remains an authentic, bright and hospitable destination, contrary to misleading reports of recent days.
As she points out, Gavdos continues to offer what has always characterized it: unique natural beauty, pristine beaches, rich biodiversity, tranquility and genuine human contact. At the same time, it keeps its tourist character alive, which is a basic support for the local community.
The mayor emphasizes that the recent image presented in some media outlets, regarding alleged mass migration flows, does not correspond to reality. The cases of migrant arrivals on the island are limited and are dealt with immediately and effectively by the port authority, with the cooperation of Frontex. These people are transferred to Crete on the same day and from there to appropriate structures in mainland Greece. Gavdos is not a point of settlement or residence for migrants.
At a time when tourism is vital for the future of the island, the mayor addresses an open call to travelers to get to know and support a place that remains unpretentious, humane and honest.
At the same time, she points out that, although Gavdos does not have the necessary hospitality infrastructure, it stands with dignity and solidarity towards those who arrive in the country in search of a better life. “Migration flows are an international issue that cannot burden small island municipalities. It is the responsibility of European governments to manage the issue with respect for both human rights and local communities,” emphasizes Ms. Stefanaki.
In closing, she emphasizes that Gavdos remains real, bright and open to the world — a place that awaits with love and dignity those seeking an experience beyond the ordinary.
