The Lyceum Club of Greek Women (Lykeion Hellinidon) of Alexandria, Egypt held an event in the ancient Egyptian city on Friday in memory and honor of Despoina Achladioti, widely known as ”Lady of Ro”, according to greekreporter.com
The event was held in the historic Julia Salvagou Theater in the city’s Greek quarter.
The ”Lady of Ro” was a Greek woman and a pure patriot, who was born on the island of Kastellorizo in 1890. She raised the Greek flag every day throughout her life, regardless of the weather, until the very day of her death in 1982. Achladioti became a legend because of her love for her nation, becoming one of the most recognizable Greek people across the country.
Evangelia Xanthopoulos, a Greek of Alexandria who lived for many years in Kastelorizo, talked about Achladioti, during the event in Alexandria. She explained what Achladioti’s story represented for people today, and stressed the strong connection between the Hellenism of Egypt with that of Greece’s Kastellorizo and the Dodecanese.
The event was attended by many Greek people who are part of the Egyptian Greek community. Senior figures of the community, such as the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Alexandria and all Africa, Theodoros II, the Consul General of Greece Athanassios Kotsionis and the president of the Alexandrian Greek community, Edmond Kasimatis, participated in the celebration.
