Greek capital of Athens to host “Space Olympics” in 2022

The 44th Scientific Assembly will take place in Athens, Greece, 16 – 24 July 2022, according to the decision made by the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR), int.ert.gr reports.

The Greek nomination prevailed among the candidatures of Warsaw, Lausanne and Prague. Indeed, Athens was voted for, during the first round at the 42nd COSPAR Congress in Pasadena, California, which was attended by more than 3,300 space scientists from around the globe.

COSPAR’s international conference has been dubbed “Space Olympics” and is held every two years in a different continent. The conference in Athens is expected to bring some 4,000 international space experts and scientists from universities and research centers across the globe, representatives of the largest international space agencies, as well as the world’s largest space technology companies, who will have exhibition stands in place.

The 2022 bid was prepared by the Office of Space Research and Technology of the Academy of Athens and was actively supported by the Ministries of Digital Policy and Tourism, the City of Athens as well as many universities and research institutions in Greece, while the support from Greek diaspora scientists was equally enthusiastic and moving.

The Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) was established in 1958, shortly after the launch of the space age. Its aims are the promotion of international Space Research and Technology and its peaceful exploration.
