The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Mitscher arrived in Piraeus, on Saturday for a scheduled port visit, according to greekreporter.com.
U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa command announced the visit serves “to enhance U.S.-Greece relations as the two allies work together for a stable, secure, and prosperous region.”
The ship’s presence in the Mediterranean Sea is “a demonstration of our continued commitment to the collective security of the region, and Mitscher’s port visit in Piraeus is another demonstration of our view of Greece as a pillar of regional stability,” it continues.
“The people of Greece gave us a very warm reception,” noted Cmdr. Ian Scaliatine, commanding officer of Mitscher. “The crew is very excited to explore the history of Athens and learn more about Greek culture. We are looking forward to a great port visit here in Piraeus.”
