Greek PM to attend Belt & Road Initiative Forum II in China on April 25-27

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will be travelling to Beijing as of Thursday, accompanied by Foreign Minister Giorgos Katrougalos, to attend the “Belt and Road Initiative Forum II” initiative of China from April 25 to 27, according to ANA.

China’s presence in Greece through its investment by Cosco at the Port of Piraeus, government sources said, highlights the strategic importance China places on Greece as a rising top container and logistics hub in the region.

The two countries are expected also to sign a new, three-year collaboration framework (2020-2022) between the Greek Ministry of the Economy and China’s National Committee of Development and Reforms. The deal will focus on energy, transportation, telecoms, manufacture, research and development, and banking.

According to the National Herald, with the Chinese company COSCO that runs the port of Piraeus seeing plans for a 600-million euro ($668.76 million) blocked for now by an archaeological council and members of his Radical Left SYRIZA opposed to foreign investors, the Greek Prime Minister is headed back to Beijing.

It will be his third trip there in three years as he was keen on attracting more Chinese businesses interested in Greek state properties his government is selling off after he said it wouldn’t, bowing to demands of international creditors.
