The International School of Geoparks will take place online from Lesvos island

The International School of Geoparks, UNESCO Global Geoparks’ annual leading training course for executives that takes place in Lesvos, will be held online this year because of the restrictive measures taken due to the coronavirus pandemic, int.ert.gr reports.

The Digital International School of Geoparks 2020 is co-organized by the University of the Aegean’s Department of Geography, the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest, UNESCO and the Global Geoparks Network. Lectures will be given by distinguished scientists from UNESCO, Universities, Research Centers and Institutes from 30 countries.

The course is open to Geopark executives, staff members in the field of tourism or of scientific bodies that collaborate with geoparks and plan or implement innovative actions for the development of geotourism, management and promotion of our geological heritage.

The International School of Geoparks 2020 is attended by 135 participants from 41 countries around the world: England, Australia, Belgium, Vietnam, Brazil, France, Zambia, USA, Japan, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Spain, Canada, Colombia, Congo, Cyprus, Belarus, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Morocco, Mexico, Myanmar, Botswana, New Zealand, Nepal, Holland, Uganda, Uruguay, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Thailand, Tanzania, Turkey, Philippines, Finland and Chile.

The course gathers global interest and promotes Lesvos as a training center and model for the creation and operation of Geoparks around the globe.
