First art exhibition after 2020 opens at Consulate General of Greece in New York

The first open event at the Consulate General of Greece in New York since the beginning of 2020, when large gatherings were canceled due to the pandemic, was held on December 16.

The opening of the art exhibition, entitled “Figure and Form” with paintings by the late Nassos Dafnis (1914-2010) and sculptures by George Petrides, is an original visual dialogue between the two Greek-American artists.

Speaking to The National Herald, Consul General of Greece in New York Dr. Konstantinos Koutras, expressed his satisfaction with the current situation and the general symbolism of the event.

“Almost two years have passed since our last event at the Consulate General and then COVID found us. It is the first event we have held in the midst of a pandemic – because the pandemic is still here – we decided to move forward, observing all the safety measures for our fellow citizens who came to honor our event tonight and we are glad that the response of the people is so warm,” Koutras said.

As it is noted in the exhibition guide, both artists had New York as their artistic base, nevertheless, their work always reflected their love for Greece.

“These are two great artists, one living, who looks to the past, and one who, unfortunately, is not with us, but who looked to the future. The combination of these two artists created a narrative, which is attractive,” said the Greek Consul General in New York.

The exhibition will remain open to the public until January 20, 9 AM-2:30 PM, with Koutras sending wishes of hope and optimism.

“I thank all the media who were with us today to spread the message of optimism, a better tomorrow, to look to the future with optimism, to have a Merry Christmas, and for everyone to be healthy,” Consul General Koutras concluded.
