The Region of Central Greece and the Municipality of Karystos are joining forces again this year to organize the 3rd Astrophysics and Night Sky Observation Festival. The Karystos open-air theater will host two evenings full of scientific lectures, telescopic observation and unique experiences for young and old on August 8 and 9.
The program begins with Dr. Antonios Antoniou (Professor of the University of Peloponnese) and the introductory lecture “Time, a familiar stranger”, followed by Dimitris Malliaris (President of the Chalkida Astronomy Society) on the topic of amateur astronomy and its contribution to science.
On the second evening, Dr. Theodoros Karakasidis (University of Thessaly) on Mars and space technology, Fanis Smanis (PhD(c) Astrophysics) on research astrophysics and telescopes, and Takis Theodosiou (Director of the Hellenic Meteorite Museum) who will talk about meteorites, the “messengers” of our Solar System.
At the same time, the space will feature a mobile planetarium, a meteorite exhibition and telescopic observation, while visitors will also have the opportunity to see a replica of the Antikythera Mechanism, courtesy of Professor Xenophon Moussas.
“We are happy to bring the sciences closer to Central Greece residents of all ages through high-level speeches and actions,” said the Deputy Regional Governor for Innovation and Digital Governance, Konstantinos Vardakostas.
