In Mathia, a small village in the region of Heraklion, Crete, known for its deep roots and rare natural beauty, summer is not just a season for vacations—it’s a time for participation, coexistence, and meaningful experience.
On August 10, the Cultural Association of Mathia, in collaboration with the Regional Unit of Heraklion, is organizing the second annual Mathia Run—a dynamic sports event that further strengthens Crete’s position on the map of sports tourism in an authentic, accessible, and human-centered way.
Running Through Tradition and Nature
The event features 2.5 km and 5 km routes, taking participants through the traditional village, rural paths, and part of the main road connecting Mathia with nearby settlements Geraki and Amarianos. It’s a heartfelt invitation to all—whether local residents or passing travelers—to discover the village by running alongside its people.
The first edition of Mathia Run in 2024 was already a clear success, showcasing the enthusiasm a local sports event can generate even in small-scale communities. More than 150 runners took part, including well-known athletes from Heraklion and dozens of children under 15 who ran a specially designed kids’ course. Thirty volunteers, both locals and supporters from neighboring villages (Amarianos, Geraki, Kastamonitsa, and Kastelli), came together to support the event, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
2025: Building a Local Sports Tradition
Mathia Run 2025 aims to build on last year’s success and further establish itself as a meaningful annual tradition. The event merges light exercise with physical activity in a landscape that connects visitors to the Cretan countryside, its people, and the joy of shared effort. The routes are selected and designed by experienced organizers to be accessible for all ages and fitness levels.
But the event also carries a deeper purpose: to raise awareness of the role of sport as a tool for social inclusion, community empowerment, and mental and physical well-being.
A Different Kind of Tourism
From a tourism perspective, Mathia Run is gaining unique value. It boosts Crete’s image as a destination with a vibrant athletic and cultural life, highlights the role of local institutions in activating communities, and attracts visitors seeking meaningful, participatory travel experiences. Whether it’s vacationers from the surrounding area or Cretans blending holidays with active events, Mathia Run becomes a magnet for a different type of tourism.
A Village That Embodies Belonging
Mathia, with its traditional architecture, sense of authenticity, and tight-knit community, provides the perfect backdrop for such a celebration. Framed by vineyards and olive groves in the heartland of Heraklion, and infused with the warmth of local hospitality, every participant leaves the event with more than just a commemorative medal—they leave with a sense of belonging.
