With a focus on democracy, the rule of law and regional development, the Gortys Forum 2025 opens on Friday, October 17 at the Messara Museum, an initiative of the European Institute for Regional, Development and Social Policies, which aspires to be a modern platform for institutional dialogue and innovation for sustainable development and a fairer society.
The event, which will last until Saturday, October 18, draws its inspiration from the Gortys Code, the oldest surviving code of laws in Europe, conveying the timeless message of justice and citizen participation in the modern era.
At this point, it should be emphasized that the Forum aims to create a timeless space for dialogue, where cultural heritage meets the challenges of democracy, social justice and sustainable development, through collaborations between universities, institutions and social actors. The main axes of the Gortys Forum are Social Justice: Strengthening equality in access to knowledge, technology and opportunities, as well as highlighting the importance of participatory governance and transparency at local and national levels, Regional Development: Creating cooperation hubs in rural and island areas, based on the model of local autonomy and prosperity, and strengthening the links between cultural heritage and innovation, Technologies and Artificial Intelligence: Promoting digital democracy and developing ethical frameworks for artificial intelligence, with respect for proportionality and the protection of the impossible, inspired by the principles of the ancient legislation of Gortys, and Culture: Highlighting cultural continuity from antiquity to the present day and creating a dialogue between tradition and innovation, with the aim of cultural sustainability and social cohesion.
In an era of intense transformations, the Gortys Forum comes to give a platform to local communities, scientists and citizens who seek a new model of participatory development and institutional stability.
As highlighted by the European Institute, the Forum seeks to strengthen the interconnection of institutions, education and innovation, promoting solutions for the resilience of regions and social well-being.
It is worth noting that the thematic sections of the Forum will include discussions on the rule of law, democracy in regional governance, the relationship between culture and technology, as well as green and social innovation as drivers of development of modern Crete and Europe. The Gortys Forum aspires to be a bridge between the past and the future, highlighting the importance of institutions, participation and cultural identity for a democratic and sustainable society.
