For twelve days, the island of Chios was transformed into a vibrant space of art, knowledge, and inspiration during the 4th edition of THE CHIOS FESTIVAL. Leading figures from culture, science, and contemporary creation from Greece and abroad gathered at iconic locations across the island — from Emporios and Nea Moni (a UNESCO Monument) to Castelli, the Castle of Chios, Petrokaravo, and Anavatos — weaving together ideas, values, and eras, from antiquity to Artificial Intelligence.
At Emporios, lectures and musical performances took place, while Nea Moni and Avgonyma hosted events centered around art and history, accompanied by musical backdrops that highlighted the unique character of each venue.
At Castelli, discussions focused on Artificial Intelligence, Environment, Art, Biotechnology, and Innovation, bringing together individuals from diverse academic and artistic fields.
The Castle of Chios hosted an Italian-themed evening with music and dance, while in Vrontados, at Petrokaravo, the Greek National Opera Ballet presented Return of the Summer, a poetic dance piece.
The festival concluded at Anavatos, where Medea was performed with piano accompaniment, offering a powerful finale amidst the dramatic natural setting of the historic village.
A Festival with a Growing Identity
Though still a relatively new institution, the Chios Festival has managed, in just four years, to forge a strong identity. Its diverse program, striking a balance between arts, science, and tradition, has already positioned it among the most engaging cultural events in Greece. Having followed the last three editions closely, I can confidently say that the bar rises each year: the programming becomes bolder, the collaborations deeper, and the island itself increasingly steps into the spotlight.
According to the festival’s artistic director and driving force, Dimitra Moutzouri:
“The festival began as a daring idea, inspired by our love and admiration for the island, its culture, and its heritage — a mission and vision by the Region of North Aegean to showcase its islands, their history, and beauty on the global map. We started with Tradition and now move forward with Innovation shaping the future. We give voice to History while highlighting modern-day challenges.”

At Castelli, the setting became the stage for a unique evening where the public engaged actively in discussions on art, bioethics, and technology. The garden and architectural atmosphere fostered a sense of intimacy, creating a dialogue that bridged scientific thought and cultural expression. This encounter exemplified how Chios’ public spaces transform into living laboratories of ideas, inviting public interaction and enabling curated presentations.
Emporios: History Meets the Aegean
With the archaeological landscape and the Aegean Sea as a backdrop, talks in Emporios on history and excavations revealed the depth of cultural continuity. Scholars combined documentation with storytelling, making archaeology accessible to a broader audience. The evening concluded with a musical performance, underscoring how knowledge gains momentum through shared, live experience.
Nea Moni (UNESCO Monument): A Living Testament
At Nea Moni, the focus was on understanding Byzantine art and its historical dimension. Speakers provided the audience with context and tools to interpret the space — from its architecture to its iconography. The sacred atmosphere and historical memory were reinterpreted through modern dialogue, presenting the monument as a living point of reference.
In a second session at Nea Moni, attention shifted to the material culture — craftsmanship, object microhistories, and societal connections. The presentation deepened our perception of art beyond aesthetics, highlighting techniques, processes, and networks that frame its historical context.
Castelli: Dialogue in Action
At Castelli, a panel discussion brought together leaders from public administration, academia, and cultural production. Through practical examples and clear arguments, speakers demonstrated the social and educational benefits of integrating science, technology, and the arts. Public participation through questions made the discussion solution-oriented and impactful.
Castle of Chios: Music and Celebration
The Italian evening at the Castle of Chios blended classical repertoire with distinctive performances, turning the historic square into a concert venue. Music by Beethoven and Paganini echoed across the walls, showcasing the site’s acoustic power and historical resonance. The collaboration with artists from Genoa added a multicultural tone to the night.
The public filled the square, creating a festive atmosphere. Photos from the evening capture the city’s vibrant spirit, demonstrating how public spaces can host high-caliber events, strengthening Chios’ cultural identity.
Petrokaravo: Dance in the Sunset
At Petrokaravo, as the sunset painted the horizon, the Greek National Opera Ballet presented a two-part performance blending precise movement with poetic atmosphere. The choreography of Return of the Summer made full use of the natural landscape, offering the audience an experience of elevated aesthetic and emotional resonance.
Anavatos: A Festival Finale Full of Symbolism
At Anavatos, the “Mystras of Chios,” creators and institutional figures gathered for the festival’s symbolic conclusion. The presence of the artistic direction and regional representatives underscored the collaborative spirit behind the initiative. The evening highlighted the relationship between memory and contemporary creativity, reflecting the festival’s vision for the future.
Among those present: Dimitra Moutzouri, artistic director of the Chios Festival, Konstantinos Rigos, artistic director of the Greek National Opera Ballet, actress Karyofyllia Karabeti, and Konstantinos Moutzouris, Governor of the North Aegean Region.
