The Greek Hospitality Awards 2025, organized by ethosEVENTS, celebrated excellence in Greek tourism in a dazzling ceremony held on October 24 at the Athenaeum InterContinental Hotel. The event was attended by government officials, representatives of local authorities, and hundreds of leading executives from the tourism industry as well as media representatives.
At this year’s 11th edition of the Greek Hospitality Awards—an event considered a milestone for Greek tourism and once again held under the auspices of the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO)—dozens of businesses from the country’s hotel and tourism sectors received gold and silver distinctions, recognizing their innovation and substantial contribution to Greek tourism. The awards are organized by ethosEVENTS in collaboration with Tourism Media & Events.
This year’s ceremony carried special significance, taking place just before WTM London 2025, one of the world’s largest international tourism exhibitions. The awards serve not only as a recognition of achievement but also as a commercial asset and a competitive advantage for the honorees.
Opening the ceremony, Mr. Konstantinos Ouzounis, CEO of ethosGROUP, emphasized the importance of acknowledging the efforts of tourism professionals, noting that the Greek Hospitality Awards are among the largest and most significant of the 20 events organized by the group. Despite claims that Greece is turning into a “nation of hotels and waiters,” as he put it, tourism remains the country’s strongest card. “The essence is that the best are being awarded. Congratulations to all,” he stated.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Haris Theoharis, in his address, expressed his enthusiasm for this major industry event, which he said honors a sector that often remains “invisible,” discreetly serving the visitor experience. He noted that Greek tourism is transforming, with Athens now an independent destination and the season gradually expanding. “Records and numbers are not just statistics—they represent the effort, labor, and tears of tourism professionals,” he remarked, congratulating the people behind these achievements.
Deputy Minister of Tourism Ms. Anna Karamanli described the Greek Hospitality Awards as an institution that rewards entrepreneurship, service quality, and innovation, strengthening the competitiveness of Greek tourism. She referred to the record-breaking results of 2023 and 2024, as well as the positive trajectory of 2025, a year marked by new records in both revenue and arrivals.
Ms. Karamanli emphasized that behind these results are entrepreneurs and workers who invest daily in improving the tourism product. She presented the Ministry’s initiatives for a sustainable, high-standard tourism model that respects the environment and supports local communities, and concluded by warmly congratulating all award winners.
The ceremony continued with honorary awards recognizing both established and emerging entities that support the continued growth of the sector.
Member of Parliament for Thessaloniki A, SYRIZA–PS, Ms. Katerina Notopoulou, speaking to TornosNEWS, described the Greek Hospitality Awards as one of the most important and beloved events of the sector, showcasing the best face of Greek tourism — a key pillar of the national economy. She emphasized the need to develop regional growth strategies that strengthen both tourism and those working in it, promoting balanced development across the country.
Honorary Distinctions for Metaxa, Vantarakis, Loguers, the Region of Peloponnese, and the Municipality of Athens
Honorary awards were presented to Mr. Andreas Metaxas, CEO of Metaxa Hospitality Group, which celebrates 50 years of operation (Greek Hospitality Leader); Mr. Michail Vantarakis, founder of Vantarakis Hotel Collection (Greek Hospitality Pioneer); Mr. Markos Georgiou, Managing Director of Loguers (Greek Hospitality Rising Star); Mr. Dimitris Ptochos, Regional Governor of Peloponnese (Greek Hospitality Pioneer); and Mr. Haris Doukas, Mayor of Athens (Best Greek Hospitality Municipality).
Accepting the award for Athens, Mayor Doukas stated that the city is expected to reach 10 million visitors this year, consistently ranking among the top ten destinations in Europe and globally. He highlighted the role of the city’s Development Agency in strengthening Athens’ tourism product — especially in conference tourism — and underlined that the capital combines world-class hotels with a high quality of life.
At the same time, he pointed out the need to protect residents from overtourism pressures through tools such as sustainability observatories and carrying-capacity studies. “We are not Barcelona with 40 million visitors. We have 10 million, and we must plan ahead for areas like Plaka,” he noted, referring to measures such as restrictions on short-term rentals where necessary. He concluded that the goal is for Athens to be among Europe’s top five sustainable destinations in the coming years.
Regions of Peloponnese and Crete: Strategies for Sustainable Development
Regional Governor of Peloponnese, Mr. Dimitris Ptochos, described the region as a “blessed land” with unique natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, exceptional products, and — above all — people of quality and passion. He said that an organized effort is underway to strengthen tourism through strategic planning and a clear vision, acknowledging that there is still significant potential for growth. With cooperation between local authorities and society, he added, the Peloponnese can fully highlight its tourism potential and reach “where it truly deserves to be.”
Deputy Regional Governor for Tourism of Peloponnese, Mr. Thanos Michelongonas, told TornosNEWS that tourism in the region is on an upward trajectory, both in total arrivals and at Kalamata International Airport, the only international airport in the region.
He stressed, however, that numbers are not an end in themselves, but represent “time gained” to implement the region’s development plans. Expressing satisfaction with the award, he emphasized the need for spatial and seasonal dispersion of tourism flows so that more areas can benefit. Improved road access, he said, has already contributed to a better distribution of visitors, both Greek and foreign, throughout the year — though there remains a need to strengthen areas with untapped potential that still “give a lot but receive little.”
Crete’s Record-Breaking Year and the Need for Further Steps in Sustainability and Infrastructure
Speaking to TornosNEWS, Deputy Regional Governor for Tourism of Crete, Mr. Kyriakos Kotsoglou, stressed that Greek tourism is a sector unafraid of international competition and one that has developed strong extroversion. He noted that excellence has real meaning in such a vast industry, as “the best must keep getting better.”
He described 2025 as a landmark year for Crete: Heraklion is expected to exceed 4 million international arrivals for the first time, Chania to reach 1.6 million, and cruise arrivals to approach 1 million, bringing the island’s total tourism footprint to around 7 million visitors.
Despite these impressive results, Mr. Kotsoglou emphasized that Crete must invest further in sustainability, digital transformation, and infrastructure, ensuring that growth remains an opportunity, not a problem. “Tourism is here and being recognized, but forces must combine to provide it with the tools it needs,” he said, highlighting the importance of fairer distribution of tourism wealth.
He concluded by saying that strategy means not only celebrating the good but also working systematically on weaknesses.
Business Excellence and Innovation
In statements to TornosNEWS, Mr. Markos Georgiou, Managing Director of Loguers, expressed great satisfaction on behalf of his team for receiving their first distinction at the Greek Hospitality Awards, in the Sales and Marketing category — recognizing the company’s performance and growth since its founding in 2018.
He noted that the honorary award serves as motivation for even greater achievements in the future. Loguers now manages over 140 hotels in Greece and abroad, with presence in Spain and Albania, and plans to further expand its international footprint. The company is also developing an innovative digital platform that integrates data and sales techniques to boost its partner hotels — expected to launch in 2026.
Mr. Giannis Dimopoulos from ekdromi.gr expressed the company’s honor in being a Gold Sponsor of this year’s Greek Hospitality Awards — an event that, as he said, celebrates excellence in Greek tourism and highlights the industry’s leading brands. Ekdromi.gr received five awards — two Gold and three Silver — marking a strong confirmation of the company’s steady growth since its establishment in 2011.
He added that 2025 is the best year in the platform’s history, setting records in both sales and profitability. The company now counts 870,000 domestic members, over 500,000 social media followers, and collaborates with more than 2,000 hotels across Greece. He concluded by wishing all tourism businesses a successful year ahead, despite the geopolitical challenges shaping the demanding environment of 2026.
Greek Hospitality Awards 2025: Categories and Criteria
The Greek Hospitality Awards 2025 honored winners in the categories of Top Greek Hotel 2025, Top Greek Boutique Hotel 2025, Top Greek Resort 2025, and Top Greek City Resort 2025, among others — presenting a total of 135 award categories across four thematic sections.
The judging process, combining input from both a panel of experts and the public, was based on key criteria such as service quality, innovation, design, technological excellence, and overall performance.
