Samos: The North Aegean Regional Float Fishing Championship to be held in Karlovasi in December

From 14 to 19 December, the Port of Karlovasi will host the North Aegean Regional Float Fishing Championship, an event co-organised by the Region of North Aegean and NAOK. The championship is considered particularly important, as beyond its competitive dimension it highlights the fishing tradition and maritime identity of the islands of the Region, showcasing a technique deeply connected to local cultural and economic heritage.

According to the organisers, float fishing is a method of gentle and selective fishing fully aligned with the principles of sustainable marine management. This specific technique, which requires technical precision, patience and an understanding of marine conditions, enhances environmental awareness among both athletes and spectators. At the same time, its philosophy is part of a broader effort to promote activities that respect the marine ecosystem and encourage more responsible forms of sport.

Holding the Championship in December is expected to provide tangible support to the local economy of Samos during a period of reduced tourist activity. Regional officials note that the event will bring athletes, escorts, technicians and visitors to the island, offering a significant boost to accommodation, dining and related service businesses. They also emphasise that Samos is being promoted as a special-interest destination, strengthening its profile in the fields of sports and marine tourism.

The involvement of the Region of North Aegean and NAOK in the co-organisation lends institutional weight to the Championship, which carries all the hallmarks of a structured sporting event: a formal schedule, regulations, official scoring and participation by athletes competing with technique and strategy. The event also serves as a platform for training and skills development for young athletes, fostering the transmission of knowledge related to float fishing techniques.

Furthermore, the event enhances social cohesion by supporting local clubs and encouraging resident participation. The Region stresses that such championships help build a lasting tradition, placing Samos on the map of specialised sporting events and showcasing the area as a destination with the infrastructure, experience and appropriate conditions to host high-quality marine activities.
