A new study published by Booking.com revealed some fascinating statistics on sustainable tourism among global travelers, according to ecowanderlust.com.
32,000 travelers from 16 countries were surveyed by Booking.com on the subject of sustainable tourism. More than half of these global travelers expressed their likeliness to choose a destination based on its environmental impact and social responsibility.
In 2014, only 10% of respondents said they took “traditional” sustainable trips. These “traditional” sustainable trips were characterized as eco-tours, volunteerism, agritourism, camping, and cultural tourism/immersion. Not only is this poised to experience significant growth in the coming years, but we will also witness a rise in the number of global travelers seeking to reduce their carbon footprint while traveling. Beyond environmental concern, more travelers will also evaluate their destination choices based on impact on the local community.
As expected, Americans and Australians lead the survey in terms of their intentions to travel sustainably. There were, however, some interesting and contrasting trends. Brazilian respondents, for example, showed the highest interest in sustinable tourism (74%), while Dutch (39%) and Danish (36%) respondents found their travel plans influenced by social or environmental factors.
Perhaps the most interesting finding was that luxury remains a major decided factor, even amongst responsible travelers. Respondents were 50% more likely to book luxury in 2015 than they were in 2014, but also 3 times more likely to stay in “green” accommodations. This is a promising nod to the eco-luxury market. The potential for sustainable tourism to be a luxury tourism product is high.
