Hellenic Environmental Center expands activities globally

Hellenic Environmental Center (HEC) is expanding its activities in South Africa, Egypt (Suez), Panama and Jamaica, Dimitris Melissanidis, chairman of the company said addressing the inauguration event of HEC’s land facilities in Piraeus.

The company was founded in 1993 in the collection and management of oil product maritime waste, with facilities in Piraeus, Hamburg and Gibraltar.

Melissanidis said the faciilities in Greece ranked the country among the most advanced countries in the world in protecting the environment, with a company that expands in international markets in a period of national and global crisis. This is a purely Greek company, a model in national and international level, that introduced -in a pioneer way- the interconnection of maritime with energy and environmental protection, Melissanidis said, adding that the facility operates in an urban environment and it is the first company in Europe to be certified with the ISO 16304-2013 standard.

The facility covers an area of 35 stremmata (one stremma=1,000 sq.m.) on the position used by BP before HEC bought them in 2013.

Maria Louizidou, a professor at the Metsovio Polytechnic School of Athens, said that the water leaving the facilities was cleaner than the water supplied by Athens Water in the Saronic Gulf.
