Three environmental NGOs appealed to Greece’s Council of State on Friday asking it to annul an Environment ministry decision that renews a license for the operation of a PPC thermal power station in Megalopolis, Arcadia.
WWF, Greenpeace Hellas and ClientEarth ask the court to declare a ministerial decision dated September 8, 2017 that extends a 2006 decision approving the environmental conditions of operation for the unit as unconstitutional and illegal, stressing that the unit uses lignite as fuel.
The NGOs claim that the decision in question was issued without first preparing an environmental impact report adapted to the current real and legislative data, considering that seven years have gone by since the last environmental permit.
They also argue that continuing the operation of the Megalopolis thermal power unit violates a series of Greek Constitutional provisions, such as articles 24, 79 and 106 as well as European law which sets a limit to the permitted sulfur dioxide emissions and dust and nitrogen oxides.
