The infrastructure in the eastern Mediterranean to provide electricity to ships is expected to commence on a pilot project basis at the port of Kyllini, western Greece, according to European Conference program ELEMED, held at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, ANA reports.
The EU-funded ELEMED project aims to promote ship and port electrification, in an effort to reduce the environmental footprint of shipping and and to improve sea routes between island regions of Greece.
In statements to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, the deputy regional governor on tourism, Spyros Galiatsatos, said that “the first ship electrification infrastructure in the eastern Mediterranean starts on a pilot project basis from the port of Kyllini, which connects directly with several ports of the Ionian Islands such as Zakynthos, Poros, Sami and Piso Aetos.”
