Rhodes island's miniature horses inspire documentary with environmental slant

The unique miniature horses on the Aegean island of Rhodes in Greece, a rare and vanishing breed found only on the island, have served as the inspiration for a short documentary filmed by a group of Rhodian middle school children entitled simply “Zei” (Greek for ‘it is alive’), ANA reports.

The “Cin-ekfrazein” group have put a decidedly environmental spin on their film, seeing as only a handful of the tiny horses that have lived in Rhodes for centuries still remain, and have been invited to take part in international film festivals.

Even though their origins are lost in the mists of time, the unique breed is now under intense pressure from the rise of technology that has limited its usefulness to farmers. Efforts to save the breed began in 2001 by the “Phaethon” club, which succeeded in collecting and stabling the little horses, ensuring their survival, while sensitising the local community to their plight.
