A Turkish couple used a donkey and wheelbarrows to carry their groceries this week as a protest against the newly-introduced nationwide law instituting charges for plastic bags in Turkey, according to greekreporter.com
The two people used this unique and picturesque means to express their disagreement with the Turkish government’s recent decision to impose a 0.25 Turkish lira (€0.04 – $0.05) charge on every plastic bag used in the country in an effort to minimize the consumption of plastic.
According to the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet, the incident took place in the central Anatolian province of Niğde, and understandably became the main topic of discussion across the entire region.
Additional charges for the use of plastic bags have been imposed in nations across Europe, with Greece introducing the fees last year. Greece plans to raise the fee to €0.09 from the current charge of €0.04, in an effort to meet the target that has been set by the European Union.
The European Union has set a goal for member states to reduce the use of plastic bags to a maximum of 90 per person in 2020 and 40 by the end of the year 2025.
Recently, the European Parliament voted for a total ban of the use of plastic bags within the European Union, in hopes that this drastic measure will greatly reduce environmental damage. The new E.U. ruling will change how more than 500 million Europeans go about their daily shopping.
