Reusable bags and trolley bags will be distributed starting February to elderly citizens of 4 Greek municipalities, Alternate Minister of Environment and Energy Sokratis Famellos announced on Tuesday, during a press conference presenting the results of the plastic bag charge, ANA reports.
The initiative is part of a pilot scheme aimed at further reducing the use of plastic bags, Famellos explained, adding that the pilot scheme is returning the revenue from the measure (charging 0.03 cent per bag in 2018; 0.07 in 2019), which has been implemented by EU law since 2018.
During the first 9 months of 2018 the plastic bag charge yielded 15,506,584.29 euros while the target of the European directive is for the consumption of plastic bags to be reduced to 90 bags per citizen per year, with Greece now recording a little over 100.
