For Greek scouts, the “International Day of Forests” (March 21) and “World Water Day” (March 22) are not just two milestones, according to ANA.
For 109 years, since 1910, when scouting commenced in Greece, its members have been involved in the conscious management and protection of the environment by implementing some of the first tree planting in Attica, participating in voluntary fire protection, cleaning pine trees, watering seedlings, supporting Firefighting Groups, and others. In fact, in 2018 alone, scouts throughout Greece have planted over 50,000 trees, shrubs and plants through volunteer environmental awareness actions.
In fact, the 45 scout/educational centres in Greece have adopted modern means to minimise the waste of water during their operation. For scouts, outdoor activities are, in principle, a means of educating and developing environmental awareness, as well as a volunteer effort to protect the ecosystem by introducing more than 13,000 young people and children to a responsibly sustainable lifestyle each year.
