Greenpeace called on Greek parties to openly state their environmental policy ahead of Sunday’s elections, in a statement on Wednesday, according to ANA.
The organization pointed out that according to UN’s urgent warnings, there are only 11 years left to reduce all fossil fuel use by half, and about 25 years to reduce use to zero, in order to ensure the planetary temperature does not rise beyond 1.5 degrees Celsius, a danger point. Failure in this, it said, “would mean terrifying and non-reversible repercussions for Greece.”
To date, none of the large political parties has tabled proposals in this direction, the activist organization said. On the contrary, their proposals appear to correlate with estimates of the planet’s heating up by 3C degrees or above, “in other words, with non-reversible destruction of Greece.”
