Beaked whale found dead at Greek island of Salamina despite care efforts

A Cuvier’s beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris) cared for becoming stranded at the coastal suburb of Alimos last Friday was found dead on Tuesday morning at the Kynosoura promontory of Salamina island, the Environment Ministry said, according to ANA.

The Port Authority had been asked to patrol around Salamina island to check whether the cetacean had finally headed out to sea or become stranded again. The dead animal was transferred to a safe space for an autopsy by veterinarians of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the city of Salamina, and its case will be entered in the relevant Greek and international databases.
