Every can counts for the Rethymno Carnival: "Turn to dance" and recycling

  • For the third consecutive year, the Municipality of Rethymno, in collaboration with the recycling program “Every Can Counts” and MAMOS beer invites locals and visitors who will be at the Rethymno Carnival 2025 to take action for the environment.

In this innovative “event”, boys and girls – recycling agents – will “parade” among the public with large recycling backpacks, to remind carnival-goers to keep public spaces clean and to help them recycle the empty beer and soft drink cans that they will consume during the big parade on Sunday, March 2.

The goal of the action is to raise awareness and inform citizens about the benefits of a circular economy, laying the foundations for a more sustainable way of organizing carnival events, in one of the largest and most historic carnivals in the country.

In addition to the “mobile” recycling with backpacks, carnivalists will have the opportunity to recycle their cans in the giant metal mesh recycling bins that form the word #RETHYMNO in the Labyrinth area. The impressive installation is located on the site throughout the year, creating a permanent recycling point but also an ideal photography backdrop for the city’s citizens and visitors.

A celebration centered on people and the environment

Over time, the key element of the Rethymno Carnival has been its people. Organized or unorganized groups, which in many cases are active throughout the year, develop intense social or cultural action even during the carnival period, escaping the stereotype that carnival is only fun. And this year’s recycling action confirms it in the best way.

Every box we recycle can be turned into a box again, saving 95% energy compared to its production from virgin aluminum. Every choice we make, every habit we change is a small act of our daily lives that can make a big difference for the environment and our fellow human beings.

“Every Box Counts” is present in 21 countries in Europe, Brazil, the United Arab Emirates, and the USA. Every year, the program participates in carnival events in various cities around the world. This year, in addition to the Rethymno Carnival, visitors can recycle aluminum cans at the iconic Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans, which is renowned as the largest street party in the United States.
