How will Halki become a green and sustainable island

The municipality of Halki has approved the Sustainable Urban Mobility Development Plan, with the aim of submitting it to the competent ministry.

Specifically, Halki is a beautiful tourist destination in the southern Aegean. With a population of no more than 500, it is an ideal destination during the summer months, as it offers visitors the peace and quiet they seek in a beautiful environment. All these elements allow Halki to become a “Green and Sustainable Island”.

In order to achieve its transformation into a model of sustainability and sustainable development, the implementation measures concern both mobility and the management of Renewable Energy Sources.

In the field of mobility, Halki is already characterized as an island with low air pollutants, as the use of motorized vehicles is limited due to the road network, which includes several pedestrian streets. Through the use of electric vehicles, minibuses, and alternative means of transportation, which will facilitate the movement of residents and visitors, Halki can be transformed into a sustainable and “green” destination with easy access to all points of interest on the island.

In this direction, the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan is a strategic plan that meets the mobility needs of residents, visitors, and businesses in large and small urban centers and in island areas while ensuring the quality of life.

Car-Free Travel

The aim of the Plan is to address mobility issues on the island of Halki, especially during the tourist season, and to transform the island into a Green and Sustainable Destination, where all visitors and residents will be able to travel without the need for a private car and will have equal access to every point of interest.

Furthermore, the Halki Plan was developed following a participatory co-planning process through which the vision, objectives, measures, and policies to achieve them will be selected. The sustainable design was based on the views of citizens, stakeholders, and visitors to improve travel with respect for the environment and with the aim of reducing the energy footprint.

Halki, through the implementation of the Plan’s proposals, aims to transform into a sustainable island with zero emissions from traffic. Travel will be possible by alternative means such as bicycles, small electric cars, mopeds, buses, and boats, etc., upgrading the quality of life of residents and visitors.
