In one of the most unique landscapes of northern Greece, where nature meets sports and awareness, WAVE running returns this year for the tenth year. The coastal race is scheduled to take place on July 26, on a section of the coastline of the National Park of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, with Myrodatos beach in the Municipality of Avdira as a backdrop, and co-organized by the active Cultural Athletic Association of Antika.
The event has become an institution on the ecotourism map of the region, inviting runners of all ages to experience running on the sand, with the sound of the waves setting the pace. With the central message “We run for clean beaches”, the event focuses on experiential contact with nature, highlighting sports as a means of protecting the environment and strengthening the local community.
Every year, on the sidelines of the sporting event, the Antika Association organizes voluntary beach cleaning activities, strengthening the connection of the event with environmental awareness. At the same time, the participation of athletes from all over Greece and abroad confirms the appeal that WAVE running has acquired in recent years, offering a valuable boost to local tourism.
The program includes running races for young and old, an awards ceremony, as well as post-competitive events of an entertaining, sporting, and cultural nature, with live music, local products, activities for children, and the presence of local businesses. All of this constitutes a complete experience for participants and companions, combining sports with a stay in a hospitable and authentic destination.
The event is under the auspices of the Municipality of Avdira, which approved its holding at Myrodatos beach and its inclusion in the “DEMOKRITIA” cultural events program.
The Myrodato area and its natural environment
Myrodatos beach is located in the Municipality of Avdira, Xanthi, and is a quiet seaside destination with a sandy beach and clear, shallow waters, suitable for families and nature lovers. The area is adjacent to the extensive network of protected wetlands of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, such as Lake Vistonida and the Porto Lagos lagoon, which are part of the National Park of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. This proximity offers opportunities for gentle tourism development and activities in nature. The combination of coastline, natural beauty, and cultural activity makes the area attractive to visitors seeking alternative experiences near the sea.
