The municipality of Serifos is sounding the alarm for the increased water consumption recorded this year compared to previous years, in many areas of the island. The repetition of last year’s problems, combined with the ongoing drought and the natural reduction of water supply sources, has led the municipal authority to proceed with strict saving measures.
As noted, the production capacity of the Serifos water system is not sufficient to cover uncontrolled consumption, especially during the tourist season, which creates serious risks for certain areas of the island.
Prohibitions and heavy fines
Based on the Municipality’s water supply regulation, it is expressly prohibited:
The use of network water to fill swimming pools. In case of violation, a fine of 1,000 euros is provided, as stipulated by the decision of the Municipal Council (ADA: 9ΜΙΖΩ1Η-434).
The use of water for washing yards, vehicles, roads or watering crops through a hose. The relevant fine is set at 500 euros (ADA: 9ΗΧΩ1Η-21Ξ).
At the same time, the Municipality requests the assistance of all residents and visitors for the proper and prudent use of water, emphasizing that the possibility of scheduled water supply interruptions is even being considered if overconsumption continues.
Finally, the deputy mayor of water supply and sanitation calls on citizens to contribute responsibly to the management of this valuable resource, in order to avoid extreme measures, but also to ensure the uninterrupted water supply of the island.
