Gavdos: Pioneers in water management and offers it free of charge to residents and visitors

A new era begins for Gavdos with the installation and operation of the Water Kiosk in the Karave area, an autonomous drinking water purification and supply system that provides a sustainable solution to one of the island’s most basic challenges: access to clean and quality water.

The “Water House” as the residents call it, is a technologically advanced infrastructure that can produce up to 19 cubic meters of drinking water per day, making it available free of charge to both residents and visitors. This new water supply drastically reduces dependence on bottled water and limits the use of plastic, enhancing the island’s ecological footprint.

The importance of the installation is crucial for an isolated island destination like Gavdos, where water resources are limited and their management is critical. The Water Kiosk offers reliability in everyday life, environmental protection and equal access to clean water for all, residents and visitors.

The project was implemented with the funding of the Ministry of Shipping and Insular Policy, thanks also to the decisive contribution of the Secretary General of the Aegean and Insular Policy, Mr. Manolis Koutoulakis, who actively supports the island, has visited Gavdos repeatedly and has publicly expressed his “symbolic adoption”, recognizing the special needs and challenges of a small island that often remains outside the national planning. The Municipality warmly thanks him for his continued support.

As the Municipality of Gavdos points out, the Water Kiosk is a project with real value only if it is used correctly and with respect. Residents and visitors are encouraged to integrate it into their daily lives, to use reusable bottles and to contribute to the maintenance and protection of the equipment.

It is noted that caution is required when entering and exiting the Kiosk’s surroundings until its configuration is complete.

The Water Kiosk is another step towards a sustainable, self-sufficient and more equal Gavdos – an island that demands the solutions it deserves.
