Filiata: "No" to the water supply of Corfu with water from Thesprotia

The Municipality of Filiates declares its opposition to the possible water supply of Corfu with water from the Thesprotia hydrological basin that will be transported through 20-kilometer-long pipelines from Sagiada to the island of Phaeacia.

In this direction, the Municipality of Filiates adopted a resolution for the protection and rescue of the sources of Lagavitsa, so that it is not included in the plans of the State bodies for the water supply of Corfu, which, among other things, is as follows:

“With immense sadness, but also anger and indignation, we have recently been informed by Digital and printed media of the plans of the State bodies for the water supply of Corfu with waters of the hydrological basin of Thesprotia that will be transported by 20-kilometer-long pipelines from Sagiada to the island.

In our wider area, after first they killed Kalamas, becoming the sewage pipeline of the city of Ioannina, we fear that its tributary, Lagavitsa, is now in line, in order to cover with the hitherto spotless but scarce water the water supply needs of tourist Corfu.

Our long-suffering place, the villages of Mourgana, after having suffered the “plans” of all the post-civil war governments without exception, felt the death of all its productive activities, the complete indifference to the daily life of its inhabitants, the depreciation of its primitive culture and was ultimately led to an unprecedented demographic contraction, up to its complete desertification.

As if all this were not enough, today comes the planning which, we very much fear, will include, among other things, the drying up of Lagavitsa, this life-giving source of our place.

Their scientific-technological invocations (“studies”), in no way negate the immediately impending catastrophic consequences, which are equivalent to irreparable environmental destruction, desertification after the already accomplished desolation, the willful erasure of our collective memory, the complete and definitive annihilation of our land”. Concluding the resolution states the following: “If the Greek State has decided not to leave a stone upon a stone in this thousand-tortured place, to definitively erase from the map this edge of the Greek land, with its ancient civilization, we, the remaining “headstrong” Epirusians, have not decided! We will protect our land with all our might, we will not allow it to be offered as a north to any voracious overtourism. Lagavitsa, with the poet’s pure water brought over centuries, is the soul of our land, it is the soul of his soul! It is not ceded, it is not surrendered! We will preserve it in the most legal but also the most decisive way”.
