GReco Islands Local Plan Development for Telendos, Erikoussa, Othonous and Mathraki

The procedures for the development of a local plan for the island of Telendos are progressing.

In particular, the GReco Islands initiative addresses the main challenges of the island space holistically, aiming to strengthen the competitive advantages of the participating islands and create a broader development dynamic. The strategic initiative focuses on the circular economy, green energy, smart and sustainable mobility, the protection of the natural environment and the digital empowerment of island communities.

In the first phase of implementation of the initiative, the municipalities of the islands of the North Aegean, South Aegean and Ionian Regions, with a permanent population of 100 to 3,500 inhabitants, including some smaller islands that form a single area-complex, a total of 39 islands, are eligible for the co-financing of GReco Islands projects from the NSRF 2021–2027 Programs.

According to the “GReco Islands” Charter, in the introductory stage of GRecoISLAND Candidate, a prerequisite for the award of the “GReco Candidate” label is the preparation of Local Action Plans for the small islands, which constitute the complete request of the island within the framework of the certification and awarding of the label process.

The Local Action Plans reflect the local strategy of each island for achieving the axes of the initiative, the prioritization of needs and the maturation of specific interventions. They should include an implementation plan with responsibilities, timetables and methods of execution, as well as the needs for technical support, while they will establish governance bodies for the management and monitoring of their implementation.

The preparation of the Local Action Plans by the eligible beneficiaries will aim at achieving specific objectives, such as energy transition, sustainable resource management, environmental protection, strengthening entrepreneurship and innovation, digital transformation and human resource empowerment.

Based on the above decision, the financing of the preparation of the Local Action Plans will be carried out by the Technical Assistance and Beneficiary Support Program, through the relevant Special Program Service. Each Municipality will implement a Local Action Plan per island.

Moreover, a similar process is being promoted for the islands of Erikoussa, Othoni and Mathraki.
