Aegialia: Nature and history come alive in Platanos, the Stygian Waters and the Castle of Oria

In the heart of Aegialia, nature and history blend harmoniously, offering unique experiences and living monuments that bear witness to the passage of time. From the centuries-old Plane Tree of Pausanias, which stands imposingly on the beach of Aegialia, to the mysterious Stygian Waters in the mountains and the historic Castle of Oria, the area unfolds a wealth of natural beauty and cultural heritage. The stories, legends and landscapes of Aegialia are waiting to be discovered by residents and visitors, bringing tradition to the present day.

The Plane Tree of Pausanias
In particular, the Plane Tree of Pausanias occupies a prominent position on the beach of Aigio. It is a centuries-old tree that is considered one of the oldest in Greece, with experts estimating that its age exceeds 600 years. Since 1976, the Plane Tree has been classified as a protected natural monument, an honor that highlights its unique value. Its hollow trunk hosts an old sign that refers to the ancient traveler Pausanias and the 2nd century BC, although the reference mainly concerns the 12 neighboring fountains that he describes and not the tree itself.

The history of the Plane Tree is not limited to its physical dimension. During the Revolution of 1821, its hollow trunk was used as a prison for prisoners, with a door to the opening of the trunk functioning as an entrance. With a perimeter of nearly 12 meters, its dense foliage once extended over a radius of 50 meters, offering coolness and shelter to the residents of the area.

Stygos Waters
In a different corner of Aegialia, the “Stygos Waters” fascinate nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts. These are the sources of the Krathis River, which are the birthplace of legends and beliefs associated with ancient Greek mythology. The imposing waterfall that falls from a height of 200 meters to an altitude of 2,100 meters creates an impressive landscape, accessible only after a hike lasting approximately 2.5 hours, starting from the village of Peristera. The route crosses a dense pine forest, offering unique images and an unforgettable experience to visitors.

Castle of Oria
Among the historical monuments of the area, the Castle of Oria, also known as Castle of Oria, stands out, dominating Salmenikos in Panachaikos. Its location on a hill, surrounded by cliffs and the Finikas River, made it particularly fortified. It was the last castle to fall to the Ottomans and in popular tradition is associated with the tragic death of the princess Oria, who is said to have sacrificed herself for the capture of the castle. The castle also served as a refuge against pirate raids and attacks. Today, despite its historical importance, few ruins remain of the castle, as landslides have destroyed a large part of it, making access to the area difficult or impossible.

The preservation and promotion of these monuments and natural landscapes is a central goal for the local community, which through actions and events aspires to keep alive the history and cultural heritage of Aegialia. The experience of a walk under the shady Plane Tree, the discovery of the legendary springs of Krathis and the history that the Castle of Oria exudes, compose the colorful mosaic of the area, which continues to enchant residents and visitors.
