The Municipality of Gortyna, characterized by semi-mountainous terrain with varied topography, boasts unique natural landscapes and rich biodiversity. Its new strategic plan for 20242028 focuses on the conservation and promotion of these natural and cultural assets.
Key Natural Highlights
Farakgi Trypitis: Located in the southern part of the municipality, about 73 km from Heraklion and 12 km east of Lentas, this 4 km gorge can be explored both on foot and by car. It leads to a secluded beach and features impressive vertical cliffs with numerous caves, including the cave-chapel of Panagia Trypitis, which gives the gorge its name.
Farakgi Trafoula: Part of the Asterousia Mountains, starting southeast of the village Krotos. Its narrowest section, Farakgi tou Pidimatos, is named for the legend that an animal could jump across its gap, highlighting its unique character.
Farakgi Rouva: Partly within the municipality, this is the largest gorge of the Psiloritis region. It features remarkable geological formations and small waterfalls along the stream feeding into Lake Faneromeni.
Farakgi Elyias: Also in the Asterousia Mountains, ending at the Elyias beach, this gorge hosts rich vegetation of pines and carobs, forming an important ecosystem.
Cultural Heritage
Miamos Cave: Located in the village center, it served as a residence and possibly a place of worship since the Neolithic era.
Strategic Focus
The municipalitys strategy emphasizes:
Promotion and protection of natural and cultural assets.
Sustainable development, especially through eco-tourism.
