A clear shift in the Asia-Pacific travel public towards experiential experiences with an authentic character, meaningful human contacts and a strong local element was recorded as a trend by the Greek boutique hotels & villas management company Square Lime, during its participation in the international luxury tourism exhibition Luxperience 2025 in Sydney.
The Australian market, particularly mature in the premium tourism sector, reflects how luxury is being redefined internationally:
- Greece remains firmly in the top choices, however, exchange rates and the increased cost of travel have led many to seek experiences with better value for money closer to their homeland.
- Extended stays in a single destination are becoming increasingly popular — 58% of Australian overseas travellers visited just one country per trip in 2024, up from 42% in 2019.
- Japan continues to captivate Australians, with 56,440 trips in July 2025 and ranked in the top 10 global destinations for Australians (The Canberra Times). For the first time, Japan has overtaken Italy as the most popular international destination (LATTE Luxury News).
Demand for boutique, experiential and laid-back destinations remains strong. Travellers are seeking more authentic, ‘human’ places — where quality trumps quantity and hospitality has soul. “Australia remains a market with a strong preference for meaningful travel — visitors value time, authenticity and a genuine sense of place,” said Vasilis Lapanaitis, founder of Square Lime.
With a low-noise, high-impact philosophy, Square Lime focused on targeted meetings with professionals who share a common vision: sustainable, design-led hospitality that focuses on experience, not volume. Attendees’ interest focused on boutique, family-friendly and environmentally conscious accommodations, confirming that meaningful travel is now at the heart of modern luxury.
Building on the insights and partnerships cultivated in Sydney, Square Lime continues to shape the next chapter of meaningful travel, focusing on sustainable architecture, authentic connections with local communities and technology that enhances personalized experiences without replacing the human dimension of hospitality.
Through initiatives such as Naxos Premium, an experience concept that combines authenticity, gastronomy and slow travel, Square Lime seeks to unite destinations under a common narrative of ethos, sustainability and local identity. At the same time, it focuses on preserving cultural heritage, empowering communities and environmentally responsible development.
Square Lime, a specialized boutique hotel management company in Greece, currently manages a portfolio of over 40 boutique properties in leading Greek destinations, such as the Cyclades, Mani, Epirus, Crete and Attica, prioritizing collaboration with hotels that have a unique character and offer luxury hospitality experiences.
