The Greek who won an Oscar for ‘Stutterer’

One Greek, Michael Paleodimos, managed to win the Oscar for Best Short Film with “Stutterer” at the 2016 Academy Awards.

He was the director of photography for the award-winning film, and yesterday he walked up to the stage along with Benjamin Clear and Serena Armitage, the writer/director and producer of the movie, to accept the Academy Award.

Paleodimos was born on October 1, 1984, in Athens and when he was 17 years old he moved to London to study clinical biochemistry. Until then, he was an amateur photographer, but when he returned to Greece to perform his military service, he started cooperating with some Greek magazines, such as Esquire, Vogue and Cosmopolitan before entering the movie industry as a production assistant at Pulse Films London.

In the last couple of years, he has been primary shooting fashion videos, shorts and commercials.

Then, he decided to create his own production company and he met director Benjamin Cleary. Together they decided to create their first short film which won the golden statuette.

About the film

The Irish-produced film follows the story of a young and reclusive typographer who has a severe speech impediment that causes other to judge him or completely pass him by, yet he has a very intense and articulate inner voice that only the viewer gets to hear.

Before winning last night, the film had already racked up numerous distinctions and awards at film festivals all over the world, including the Heartland Film Festival and the Edmonton International Film Festival.

It is about a lonely typographer, Greenwood (Matthew Needham) who strikes up an online relationship with a girl called Ellie (Chloe Pirrie). When she suggests they meet up ‘offline’, Greenwood must face his innermost fears.

The film was made on shoestring budget of just five thousand pounds, the director rented his room for two months and slept on a friends couch, so every penny could be put into making Stutterer.

Stutterer has been selected for almost thirty prestigious film festivals and took home the Best Foreign Film prize from the Oscar qualifying Los Angeles International Short Film Festival, the Special Jury Award at Savannah Film Festival, Best International Short Film Prize at Kerry Film Festival, the Best Drama Award at Aesthetica Short Film Festival and many more.
