Global tourism is changing. A relaxing getaway is no longer enough; the goal is substance, experience, and emotion. According to Mastercard’s “Travel 25” study, travelers are turning to meaningful travel, from wellness trips and culinary tours to passionate sports getaways.
Experience instead of just a destination
Modern travelers seek more than just transportation: they seek experiences that transform them. Wellness is a top priority. Destinations such as Namibia, South Africa, and Thailand stand out worldwide, while in Europe, Italy and Poland are emerging with offers that combine nature, rejuvenation, and local culture.
At the same time, outdoor activities are becoming a must. The Scandinavian countries – led by Finland – are gaining ground thanks to their national parks, while safari experiences in South Africa and Zambia remain iconic.
And of course, gastronomy plays a central role. Cities such as Istanbul, Barcelona, ??Sorrento, and Mykonos attract travelers who want to taste local identity through cuisine.
Germany is at the forefront
German travelers are leading the way, spending more on experiences that reflect their passions. For example, during the Champions League final in London in 2024, German fans spent 61% more, confirming that sport is becoming a strong travel motivator.
Asia and Europe: The Protagonists
The top summer destinations, according to Mastercard flight booking data, are in Asia, with Tokyo and Osaka leading the way. However, Europe also holds its place firmly with seaside options such as Palma de Mallorca, Larnaca, and Sharm el Sheikh, and cultural hubs such as Paris and London.
Locality, Extended Stay, and Business Travel
Remote working and the need for sustainability are affecting business travel. Businesses are focusing on regional markets, with spending on business travel within Europe by German companies increasing by 10 percentage points. At the same time, travelers are staying longer, especially in long-haul destinations, and planning more targeted.
Shadows on the Horizon
The rise in tourism is accompanied by an increase in fraud. Booking fraud increased by 12%, with fraudsters taking advantage of the increased demand. Mastercard warns about secure payment methods and avoiding public Wi-Fi when shopping.
The Future: Memories with Value
2025 is expected to be the year when travelers will not only invest in destinations but in authentic, personal, and unforgettable experiences. From the stadiums of Europe to the savannahs of Africa and the spas of Asia, tourism is transforming – and with it the expectations of the modern traveler.
