International air transport passenger traffic levels exceeded the 2019 record in 2024 (+0.5%), although capacity decreased by 0.9%. At the same time, a historical record was recorded in the weight factor (83.2%) on a global scale, increased by 0.5%.
Compared to 2023, international passenger traffic increased by 13.6% and capacity by +12.8%, while in domestic flights the increase is +5.7% and +2.5% respectively.
According to IATA data, December 2024 was a particularly strong month for global air transport, closing with an 8.6% increase in total demand compared to 2023 and a 5.6% increase in capacity. International monthly demand increased by 10.6% and domestic demand by 5.5%, while the load factor set a historical record for the month of December, reaching 84%.
In terms of international traffic, European carriers recorded an increase of 9.7% compared to 2023, an increase in capacity by 9.2% and an increase in load factor by 0.4% (84.1%). In December, demand climbed 8.6% compared to the same month in 2023.
As for the rest of the regions…
-Asia-Pacific airlines saw a 26% increase in international traffic compared to 2023, maintaining the highest share among the regions. Capacity increased by 24.7% and load factor by 0.8 percentage points to 83.8%. Despite the strong performance, opportunities for further growth remain high, as international RPKs remain 8.7% below 2019 levels. December traffic increased by 17.1% compared to December 2023.
Middle Eastern airlines saw traffic growth of 9.4% in 2024 compared to 2023. Capacity increased by 8.4% and load factor by 0.7 percentage points to 80.8%. Demand in December increased by 7.7% compared to the same month in 2023.
North American carriers recorded annual traffic growth of 6.8%. Capacity increased by 7.4% but load factor decreased by 0.5 percentage points to 84.2%. December 2024 traffic increased by 5.1%.
Latin American airlines saw traffic growth of 14.4%. Annual capacity increased by 14.3% and load factor increased by 0.1 percentage points to 84.8%, the highest rate among the regions. December demand increased by 11.3% compared to December 2023.
African airlines’ annual traffic increased by 13.2%. Capacity increased by 9.5% and load factor by 2.5 percentage points to 74.5%, the lowest among the regions but a record for Africa. December 2024 traffic increased by 12.4% compared to December 2023.
