Fraport Greece, the operator of 14 regional airports across Greece, is launching the fourth phase of its infrastructure improvement program. Following the completion of the third construction period, this new phase continues the multi-level upgrade of the regional airports under its management.
Work Schedule
November 2025: Works begin at the airports of Kefalonia, Rhodes, Mytilene, Samos, and Mykonos.
January–February 2026: Works will begin at the remaining airports.
During these periods, runway operations will be temporarily suspended on a rotating schedule per airport. Exact dates will be announced individually.
Operational Continuity During Closures
While runways will be unavailable, all other airport services will continue to operate normally.
Emergency flights (such as medical evacuations, search and rescue, firefighting, humanitarian, state or national missions) will be allowed via helicopters.
Scope of the Fourth Phase
This phase focuses on enhancing the already high level of runway safety through:
Major improvements to Runway Safety Strips
Reconstruction of Runway End Safety Areas (RESA)
These large-scale technical works are necessary due to their complexity and are part of the Concession Agreement.
Sustainability and Compliance
Fraport Greece emphasizes that the works are being carried out with a commitment to sustainability, local respect, and social responsibility.
The company prioritizes regulatory compliance and safety at every level.
These works are co-funded by the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF).
Advice to Travelers
Passengers are encouraged to take the scheduled runway closures into account when planning their upcoming trips.
